懸崖之屋
Located on a clifftop south of Sydney, Australia, CLIFF HOUSE enjoys expansive views of the Pacific Ocean. Architecture Saville Isaacs’ aim was to create a peaceful environment for the clients on a challenging but visually stunning site. A place in which everyday living is a joy and every simple function would give cause to pause and reflect, by connecting each function to surrounding nature.
CLIFF HOUSE’s layout and design is suitable for the needs of an older couple without children. Single car parking has been provided as the owners use the nearby railway to commute to the city. At the same time, it incorporates ecologically sustainable development principles and sustainable, recycled, low or non-toxic, and cost-effective materials.
The design responds to the challenges of the south-east orientation, with windows strategically positioned to maximize winter sunlight penetration. Rainwater is captured for toilets, laundry, and irrigation.
Blackwater recycling was extensively investigated, but pump-out was installed due to unstable geotechnical site conditions, which prevented water dispersal on site.
CLIFF HOUSE relies on sea breezes for cooling and a heat-pump hydronic system augmented by wood fires for space heating, as there is no gas supply. The built outcome was the result of an extensive process, including the builder and structural, hydraulic and geotechnical engineers, to resolve the significant challenges posed by the unstable cliff-edge site. The cantilevered architectural forms enable footings to be kept away from the eroding sides of the site.
Cost-effective, readily available, and locally produced materials have been used in innovative ways with the materials’ raw beauty providing the sense of luxury and selected to ensure minimal impact on the local environment, the greater environment, and the inhabitants’ health. Materials used are standard components chosen to minimize embodied energy and cost. The building is essentially galvanized steel, plasterboard, fiber cement sheeting, recycled timber, and laminate joinery. How these materials are put together and expressed creates the quality of CLIFF HOUSE’s space and architecture.
