托馬斯·杰斐遜(1743-1826),美國(guó)政治家、思想家、哲學(xué)家、科學(xué)家、教育家,第三任美國(guó)總統(tǒng)。他是美國(guó)獨(dú)立戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)期間的主要領(lǐng)導(dǎo)人之一,參與起草了美國(guó)《獨(dú)立宣言》。此后,他先后擔(dān)任了美國(guó)第一任國(guó)務(wù)卿,第二任副總統(tǒng)和第三任總統(tǒng)。他在任期間保護(hù)農(nóng)業(yè),發(fā)展民族資本主義工業(yè)。在他任總統(tǒng)期間美國(guó)從法國(guó)手中購(gòu)買了路易斯安那州,使領(lǐng)土面積近乎增加了一倍。他被普遍視為美國(guó)歷史上最杰出的總統(tǒng)之一,同華盛頓、林肯和羅斯福齊名。
