Protecting world cultural heritage helps us further understand the unity and diversity of the development of human society, understand and respect the cultural traditions of all countries, regions and ethnic groups, absorb outstanding achievements of civilization, and promote the common development and progress of the world.
World heritage is the designation for rare and irreplaceable wealth of mankind recognized by UNESCO and the World Heritage Committee, and cultural relics and natural landscapes of outstanding significance and universal value recognized by the whole of humanity.China has a long history, a vast geographical area and rich resources, as well as abundant cultural and natural heritage. As of July 2019, China had 55 cultural and natural sites inscribed on the World Heritage List, including 37 cultural sites, 4 mixed sites and 14 natural sites, tying for first place in the world with Italy. Beijing, the capital of China, has the largest number of world heritage sites in China (seven).The sites include cultural relics, architectural complexes and ruins which represent unique artistic achievements, and are a crystallization of human creative genius and wisdom, as well as historical treasures witness to civilization for thousands of years. The Great Wall, including stretches first built in the Spring and Autumn Period and Warring States Period more than 2,000 years ago and additions made during the Ming Dynasty, is a world wonder in terms of the projects scale and scope.
