This book was compiled by China Railway Construction Engineering Group (CRCEG) before the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.I am more than willing to write a preface for it for I was there for China's assistance in the construction of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway and I witnessed CRCEG's overseas development.
I participated as a foreign aid worker in China's assistance in the construction of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway in the 1970s.Later, from the 1980s to the 1990s, was in charge of foreign economic assistance and technical cooperation at the Ministry of Railways (predecessor to China State Railway Group Co.,Ltd.).According to our national strategic plan, along with my colleagues, implemented some projects with far-reaching impacts. In 2010, was awarded the Gold Medal of China's Foreign Aid Contribution Award by the Ministry of Commerce, which should also be credited to all organizations and their employees participating in the foreign aid ofrailway construction.
I was part of our country's foreign aid railway construction projects a few times.Among them, the mos.t unforgettable one is that of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway. In the 1960s, two newly independent African countries, Tanzania and Zambia, were eager to build the Tanzania-Zambia Railway in order to boost their national economy, turned to
China for help after westem countries turned them down.Chinese leaders clearly expressed their support.October 1970 saw the start of the construction of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway. After more than five years of hard work by workers from China, Tanzania and Zambia, the 1,860.5-kilometer railway was completed. In July 1976, the Chinese government officially handed over full ownership of the railway to the two countries. The Tanzania-Zambia Railway has become the \"Freedom Railway\" in the eyes of the people of Tanzania and Zambia, and a historical monument to the friendly ties between China and Africa.
